What I want to try with a paladin is start off doing zeal as a main attack, and at the higher levels start building smite. Forgive me if it sounds like I dont know what I'm talking about I'm not a veteran diablo 2 player yet though I've had the game for a good while, but Correct me if I'm wrong cant a smiter deal out massive damage? but its a single target skill dont you have to pick a part large groups of monsters one by one? when surrounded the zealot can clean up large groups fast, but the damage from zeal doesnt quit match the damage a smiter does? probably not right?
My question is this, would it be possible to have zeal effective enough to clear out groups of monsters while smite is effective enough to pound on strong single monsters, bosses? or am I just under estimating the smiter faced with large numbers? |

zeal and smite complement each other due to the use of fanaticism aura. and with grief (which all bnet smiters seem unable to live without =P), both attacks dish out considerable amounts of damage.
like you said, zeal on mobs and smite on more resilient monsters that are usually uniques, bosses etc.
